The past two days have been nothing short of extraordinary. I ventured out with the drone, phone, and, for the first time in a long while, my trusty EOS camera. The experiences were incredible, filled with breathtaking sights, some incredible night skies, and a light dusting of snow adding magic to the landscapes. Despite the biting cold, it was more than worth it!
Grove Rake Mine Aurora: Dancing Lights Amidst History
Grove Rake Mine, located in Rookhope, is one of the most iconic remnants of Weardale’s lead mining heritage. Once a thriving hub of industrial activity, the mine operated until its closure in 1999. The remaining headgear is a poignant symbol of the area’s mining past, standing as a stark reminder of the men and women who worked these lands.
When I saw the aurora forecast, I rushed out to capture the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights dancing above this historic landmark. The vivid pinks and purples of the aurora contrasted beautifully with the stark industrial silhouette of the headgear. Using my drone and phone camera, I captured some truly magical moments that combined natural wonder with industrial heritage.
Raby Moor Farm: A Derelict Beauty
Raby Moor Farm, perched along the road to Teesdale, is a hauntingly beautiful derelict structure. Likely abandoned decades ago, the farm’s weathered stone walls and collapsed roof tell a story of rural life and resilience. The building’s position in the landscape, surrounded by open fields, makes it a striking subject for photography.
I captured this location using the drone to highlight the farm’s isolation and connection to the surrounding countryside. The aerial photos and video emphasized the farm’s place in the rolling hills of Teesdale, and the light dusting of snow added a magical quality to the scene.
Middleton-in-Teesdale: A Panoramic Delight
Middleton-in-Teesdale is a picturesque market town steeped in history. Originally built to support the lead mining industry, the town became a centre for commerce and social life in the area. Its charming stone buildings, winding streets, and proximity to the River Tees make it a favourite destination for visitors.
Using the drone, I captured stunning aerial photos and 360-degree panoramas of the town, showcasing its scenic charm. The frosty rooftops and the surrounding hills dusted with snow created a quintessential winter scene. From above, the layout of the town and its integration with the natural environment stood out beautifully.
Coldberry Lead Mine: Snow-Capped Perfection
Coldberry Lead Mine, nestled in the heart of Teesdale, is a striking example of the region’s industrial past. The mine dates back to the 19th century, and its ruins include smelt mill remains, stone structures, and old shafts. The site is a favourite for photographers and historians alike, offering insight into the once-booming lead mining industry.
The snowy landscape and clear skies made this visit extra special. I used my drone for sweeping aerial shots and panoramas, capturing the ruins from angles that highlighted their scale and setting. My EOS camera allowed me to zoom in on intricate textures and details, bringing the site’s history to life.
Huddeshope Beck: A Winter Wonderland
Huddeshope Beck flows through Teesdale, carving a beautiful path through the hills and creating stunning vistas. The beck has a long association with the mining industry, as it provided water power for various mills and works in the area. Its serene beauty today belies its industrious past.
I captured the beck from above using the drone, taking in its winding course and the snow-covered banks that framed it. The 360-degree panoramas offered a sense of scale and tranquillity, showcasing the beck as a natural gem in Teesdale’s rugged landscape.
Grove Rake Mine Under the Stars: A Night Like No Other
Returning to Grove Rake Mine the next evening, I was greeted by a stunningly clear sky filled with stars. The headgear stood silhouetted against a dazzling nightscape, with constellations and the Milky Way shining vividly. The mine’s stark industrial lines contrasted beautifully with the infinite expanse above.
Using my phone camera, I captured the scene with long exposures, framing the headgear against the celestial backdrop. It was an unforgettable experience, although the freezing temperatures—minus 6 degrees—were a stark reminder of the challenges of night photography in winter.
Reflections on the Days

From the dancing aurora at Grove Rake to the frosty landscapes of Teesdale and the breathtaking starry skies, every moment felt magical. Combining the capabilities of my drone, phone, and EOS camera allowed me to explore and share these locations in entirely new ways.
