After heading north yesterday, today was all about flying south into the beautiful landscapes of Richmondshire. With blue skies, a light breeze, and perfect conditions for drone photography, it was a day full of stunning locations and historical gems. Here’s what I discovered along the way.

Hornby Castle: Former Seat of the Osborne Family

My first stop of the day was the magnificent Hornby Castle, a grand estate dating back to the 14th century. Once the seat of the influential Osborne family, this castle has witnessed centuries of history. Restored during the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style, it stands as a symbol of the region’s aristocratic past.

With the morning sun shining brightly, the castle looked incredible. I captured some wonderful aerial photos and drone video, though I cut the session short after hearing an alarm in the area. Better safe than sorry!

Just down the road from Hornby Castle, I made an unscheduled stop at St Mary’s Church. This beautiful church dates back to the 12th century, and its medieval roots are reflected in its stonework and Gothic architectural features. With its peaceful setting in the village of Hornby, it’s a place steeped in history, connected to the noble families who lived in the nearby castle.

In the warm afternoon light, the church was a dream to capture with the drone. I took some lovely aerial video and drone photos, which really brought out the timeless beauty of this medieval building.

St Martin’s Priory: Richmond’s Hidden History

As I entered Richmond, I spotted St Martin’s Priory, a place I had never noticed before. This priory, originally founded in the 12th century, was part of the Order of St Benedict. It played a key role in the monastic life of Richmond during the medieval period, and though much of the original structure has been lost, what remains offers a fascinating glimpse into Richmond's religious history.

From the drone, I was able to capture aerial photos and video that highlight the surviving features of this ancient priory. The 12th-century architecture still stands proud, and the aerial perspective really brings out the beauty of this hidden gem.

Culloden Tower: An Elegant Folly

Next, I flew the drone over Culloden Tower, a striking 18th-century folly perched above Richmond. Built in 1746 by John Yorke to commemorate the Battle of Culloden, the tower was never meant for practical use but instead as a decorative landmark. Its stunning position overlooking the town and surrounding countryside makes it a fantastic subject for drone photography.

The aerial video and drone photos I captured show the tower in all its glory, with panoramic views of the landscape stretching out around it. This folly may have been built for show, but it remains a breathtaking sight.

Richmond Castle: A Norman Masterpiece

Richmond Castle was one of the crown jewels of today’s exploration. This Norman fortress, built by Alan Rufus in 1071, has stood for nearly a millennium and remains one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the country. Overlooking the River Swale, Richmond Castle has played a central role in the region’s military history and continues to be a symbol of power and authority.

Though English Heritage manages the site and has strict drone regulations, I was able to legally capture some fantastic drone video and photos from just outside the grounds. The shots give a powerful view of the towering keep and the breathtaking views over the Swale Valley.

A quick stop at Richmond Falls offered a moment of tranquillity. These small but beautiful waterfalls, located along the River Swale, are mesmerizing, especially with the sound of rushing water. I managed to capture a short drone video and a few aerial photos, showing the falls from a unique perspective above the river. The drone is perfect for capturing these natural wonders without needing to get too close (and wet!).

Easby Abbey: A Ruined Treasure

The final stop of the day, and the highlight, was Easby Abbey. Founded in 1152 by the Premonstratensian canons, this abbey has stood the test of time. Though it was dissolved during Henry VIII’s Reformation in 1536, its atmospheric ruins remain a serene and beautiful spot along the banks of the River Swale.

In the soft light of the late afternoon, Easby Abbey looked magnificent. The aerial photos and drone video show the full layout of the abbey’s remains, with long shadows casting dramatic contrasts across the site. This was a perfect way to end the day’s adventure.

Wrapping Up the Day

With perfect weather and a collection of incredible sites, today’s journey south into Richmondshire was one for the books. From the grandeur of Hornby Castle to the peaceful ruins of Easby Abbey, it was a day full of history and beauty. I can’t wait to start editing all the drone footage and sharing these amazing locations with you all soon!
