After what feels like forever, I finally had a chance to take the drone out for a proper exploration, and today didn’t disappoint. Weardale is a region brimming with history, from its industrial heritage to its charming towns and natural landscapes. With a mix of lesser-known spots and iconic landmarks, I had an incredible day capturing these locations from above. Here’s where I went:

Spring at Feldon Smelt Mill: A Tranquil Beginning

The Spring at Feldon Smelt Mill is a tranquil natural feature nestled within the historic landscape of Weardale, close to the remnants of the smelt mill itself. While not as well-documented as the mill, the spring likely played a crucial role during the height of mining activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Reliable sources of fresh water like this were vital for miners and their families, serving both domestic needs and industrial processes.

Using the drone, I captured stunning footage of the spring within its broader landscape. From above, the drone revealed the spring’s connection to the smelt mill and surrounding countryside, showcasing how this natural feature continues to breathe life into the historic site.

Feldon Smelt Mill was once a vital hub in Weardale’s lead mining industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Here, raw lead ore was processed using techniques that left their mark on the landscape. Though much of the structure has been lost, the remaining ruins offer a glimpse into its past.

I captured aerial views that highlighted the layout of the site, including the remains of the chimney and ore storage areas. From above, the surrounding moorland emphasised the mill’s remote and rugged location.

Crawley Reservoir: A Peaceful Escape

Crawley Reservoir, nestled within the rolling hills of Weardale, is a man-made body of water that was constructed to support local mining operations. Today, it’s a peaceful spot that attracts walkers and birdwatchers.

Using the drone, I captured stunning views of the reservoir’s still waters reflecting the overcast sky. The drone’s altitude provided a clear perspective of the reservoir’s integration with the surrounding landscape, showcasing its role in the region’s history and ecology.

Park Shops Mine & House: A Glimpse of Mining Life

This site includes the remnants of Park Shops Mine and an abandoned house that would have once served the mining community. Though small in scale compared to other sites, it offers a poignant reminder of the individuals who worked and lived in these remote areas.

From above, the drone captured the relationship between the mine workings and the house. The surrounding moorland added to the sense of isolation, and the aerial footage revealed the extent of the spoil heaps and remaining structures.

Located in a quiet corner of Weardale, West Pasture Mine was a significant lead mining site during the 19th century. Its remote location and remaining structures provide a haunting reminder of the region’s industrial past.

The drone captured the chimneys, shafts, and spoil heaps in remarkable detail, set against the dramatic backdrop of the open moors. The aerial perspective highlighted the challenges faced by those who worked here, battling harsh conditions and isolation.

Stanhope Castle, built in 1798, is a striking Georgian mansion that once served as a private residence and later became a school. Its impressive architecture makes it a standout feature in the town of Stanhope.

I captured aerial footage that showcased the castle’s symmetry and the surrounding town. The drone revealed how this grand structure remains an integral part of Stanhope’s identity, blending seamlessly with the picturesque village setting.

Stanhope Church, officially known as St Thomas’ Church, has stood for centuries as a spiritual and community centre for the town. Its origins date back to the 12th century, with later additions reflecting different architectural styles.

The drone provided a bird’s-eye view of the church’s beautiful tower and its location in the heart of Stanhope. The aerial shots captured the surrounding graveyard, offering a glimpse into the town’s long history.

Ashes Quarry, once one of the largest limestone quarries in the region, is a fascinating site with dramatic cliffs and remnants of the old works. Though nature is slowly reclaiming the area, the scale of the quarry is still awe-inspiring.

The drone’s footage showcased the sheer size of the quarry, capturing its layered cliffs and the pockets of vegetation that have taken root. The play of light and shadows across the site added a dramatic effect to the video and photos.

Reflections on the Day

Weardale never fails to impress, and today was no exception. From the serene beauty of Crawley Reservoir to the industrial remnants of Feldon Smelt Mill and Ashes Quarry, the region offers an incredible mix of history and natural beauty. Exploring these sites from above with the drone provided a fresh perspective on their significance, and I can’t wait to share the results with you all.
