After yesterday’s deep dive into Weardale, I opted to stay closer to home today. With only a few hours to spare, I set out to capture some fascinating locations in the Croxdale area. Despite the time constraints, the discoveries did not disappoint, and each site provided its own unique charm and historical intrigue.
Croxdale Hall Hay Barns: A Legacy of Agricultural Heritage
The hay barns at Croxdale Hall are part of the sprawling estate surrounding the historic hall. These sturdy agricultural buildings, likely constructed in the 18th or 19th century, reflect the agricultural prosperity that supported the estate’s operation. Traditionally used to store hay for livestock, the barns stand as a testament to the essential role agriculture played in the region’s economy.
The drone provided stunning aerial shots of the barns, showcasing their symmetrical layout and their picturesque placement amidst green fields. Capturing these historic barns from above offered a glimpse into the way they connected to the wider estate.
Croxdale Hall Chapel: A Private Sanctuary of Faith
The Croxdale Hall Chapel, dedicated to St. Herbert, was built in the late 17th century and remains a rare example of a private Catholic chapel on a family estate. It served as a place of worship for the Salvin family during a time when Catholicism faced restrictions in England. The chapel’s simple yet elegant design is complemented by its serene location within the estate grounds.
Using the drone, I captured the chapel’s harmonious blend with its surroundings. The aerial views highlighted its secluded setting and its architectural symmetry, which stands out against the natural backdrop.
Croxdale Hall: A Grand Stately Home
Croxdale Hall is a magnificent Grade I listed country house that has been the home of the Salvin family for over 600 years. Built in the early 18th century, the hall features stunning Georgian architecture and is surrounded by beautiful parkland. The estate also has ties to notable historical events, with the family’s Catholic recusancy playing a significant role in its history.
From above, the drone captured the hall’s grand façade, symmetrical gardens, and the surrounding parkland. The aerial perspective emphasised the hall’s importance as a historic and architectural landmark.
Low Burnhall Cottage: A Hidden Gem in the Woodland
Nestled within Low Burnhall Wood, this Grade II listed cottage dates back to the late 17th century. Constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a pantiled roof, the cottage served as part of the Burn Hall estate and reflects the rural architecture of its time. Today, the cottage stands in a derelict state, adding a touch of mystery to the serene woodland setting.
The drone captured the cottage in its full context, surrounded by the lush greenery of the woods. The combination of natural beauty and historic architecture created a captivating scene.
High Houghall Farm House: A Rural Relic
High Houghall Farm House is part of the Houghall estate and dates back to the 18th century. This charming yet weathered farmhouse played a significant role in local agriculture, serving as a hub for the surrounding farmland. Its robust construction and picturesque location make it a striking feature of the landscape.
The aerial footage captured the farmhouse’s quaint charm and its placement amidst rolling fields and wooded hills. The drone shots highlighted the blend of rural beauty and historical significance.
Butterby Farm: A Glimpse of Agricultural Life
Butterby Farm, located near the River Wear, is steeped in history. The Butterby area was historically known for its sulphur springs, which were believed to have healing properties. The farm itself represents the agricultural legacy of the region, with its traditional stone buildings and its scenic placement along the Wear’s meandering path.
The drone provided sweeping views of the farm and its surrounding landscape, capturing the peacefulness and timelessness of this historic agricultural site.
