After a week of anticipation, we finally made our way back to Kepier Woods near Durham to capture the stunning Belmont Viaduct. Our first attempt to reach the viaduct from the other side of the river didn’t go as planned, but this time we were determined to succeed. Armed with our cameras and drone, we set out early, ready to document the viaduct’s impressive structure from every angle. Although the weather and some unexpected challenges kept us on our toes, we’re excited to share the highlights of our day and give you a glimpse into the beauty we captured.
A Second Attempt at Belmont Viaduct
Today’s journey was all about determination. Last week, we tried to reach the Belmont Viaduct from the opposite side of the river, but despite our best efforts, we just couldn’t get there. This time, with our navigation skills sharpened and our route planned out, we set off with confidence. The viaduct, a majestic piece of 19th-century engineering, still stands tall, even though it can no longer be crossed. It’s a sight to behold, nestled within the serene beauty of Kepier Woods, and we were eager to do it justice with our photography.
Capturing the Majestic Viaduct
Upon reaching the viaduct, we were immediately struck by its grandeur. The weather was on our side, with just enough sunlight filtering through the trees to create some truly atmospheric shots. The viaduct’s towering arches and the surrounding natural beauty made for a perfect subject. We spent some time exploring different angles, trying to capture the essence of this historical structure. The stillness of the early morning added a sense of calm to the scene, making it an ideal time for photography. We’re particularly excited about the detailed shots we captured, which highlight the viaduct’s intricate stonework and its seamless integration with the landscape.
Drone Challenges and Safety
Of course, no shoot is complete without a bit of a challenge. We brought the drone along, hoping to capture some aerial footage that would give a unique perspective on the viaduct’s scale and setting. Although Belmont Viaduct is outside the no-fly zone for the nearby Frankland Prison, we decided to keep the drone low to avoid any potential issues. The breezy conditions and overhanging trees added an extra layer of difficulty, so we played it safe and kept the drone flights short and controlled. While the footage we captured isn’t as dramatic as we had hoped, it still provides a valuable viewpoint that complements the ground shots. We’re looking forward to piecing it all together in the editing room.
Looking Ahead: Editing and Future Plans
Now that we’re back home, the real work begins. We’ve got a mountain of photos and footage to sift through—not just from today, but also from our weekend in Scarborough. The editing process is always exciting, as it’s when we get to see all our hard work come together into a cohesive story. This week’s weather forecast looks a bit windy, so our drone may have to stay grounded for a while, but we’re hopeful to get out and capture some more shots closer to home.
This trip to Kepier Woods was a reminder of why we love what we do—exploring new places, overcoming challenges, and capturing the beauty of our surroundings. We’re excited to share the final results with you soon and hope you’ll enjoy seeing Belmont Viaduct from our perspective.
