Today was a little different, with less focus on high-flying drone captures and more time spent on the ground. Using the DJI Neo to follow my steps and the trusty pocket camera, I delved into some unique and overgrown locations. Here’s a look at where the day took me:

Hownsgill Caves: A Hidden Legacy of Construction

Located near the iconic Hownsgill Viaduct, the Hownsgill Caves are thought to have been created during the construction of the viaduct in the mid-19th century. The caves may have been used for storing tools, sheltering workers, or even as temporary accommodations during the viaduct’s construction, a testament to the ingenuity of the time. Over the years, they’ve become a hidden gem, tucked away and overgrown.

Armed with the pocket camera, I ventured into the caves, capturing their atmospheric interiors. The DJI Neo followed me seamlessly through the cramped and uneven space, providing dynamic footage of the exploration. The play of light and shadows inside the cave added a mysterious charm to the captures.

Tucked away near Consett, the Wharnley Burn Waterfall is a serene and picturesque spot. Flowing over moss-covered rocks, the waterfall is a tranquil escape, with the soothing sound of water and a backdrop of dense greenery.

Exploring this hidden gem, I used the pocket camera to get close to the cascading water, capturing the intricate details of the mossy rocks and surrounding plants. The DJI Neo provided aerial perspectives as it followed me around the site, offering a dynamic view of the waterfall’s beauty and its natural setting.

Located near Edmundbyers, the Swandale Lead Mine and its accompanying cottage and college building are relics of the North Pennines’ rich mining history. Dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, the lead mine was part of a thriving industry, with the cottage and college providing housing and possibly education for workers and their families. Today, these abandoned buildings stand as poignant reminders of a once-bustling community.

I explored the site with the pocket camera, capturing the decaying stonework and the haunting beauty of the overgrown structures. The DJI Neo followed me closely, documenting my steps around the buildings and mine workings, while the DJI Mini 4 Pro took to the skies for aerial photos and video. The drone provided stunning views of the entire site, showcasing the buildings’ layout amidst the rolling hills.

The afternoon took me to Durham City, where I spent time practising phone photography and revisiting familiar sights. The city’s blend of historic and modern architecture never ceases to inspire, with its cobbled streets and scenic riverside views.

Using the DJI Mini 4 Pro, I captured more shots of the Cathedral, but the elusive perfect photo still remains a goal for another day. The drone provided a fresh perspective, but sometimes the challenge lies in capturing that one breathtaking image.

Wrapping Up the Day

Today was all about balance—exploring unique spots on the ground with the DJI Neo and pocket camera while still capturing stunning aerial views with the DJI Mini 4 Pro. From industrial relics to natural beauty, each location brought something different to the day. I can’t wait to share the photos and videos—stay tuned for more!
