The snow arrived overnight, painting the Northeast in a stunning blanket of white. While it meant my fitness plans were put on hold, it was the perfect excuse to grab my camera and drone for a day of exploration. There’s something magical about familiar landmarks transformed by snow, and today didn’t disappoint. From historic bridges to serene churches, I had the chance to see Durham in a whole new light.
Langley Moor Viaduct

Langley Moor Viaduct, built in the mid-19th century, is an impressive example of Victorian engineering. Carrying the East Coast Mainline, its tall, sweeping arches have stood the test of time and continue to serve one of the country’s most important railways. Its bold design reflects the ambition of an era when railway construction transformed the landscape.
With the drone, I captured the viaduct’s grandeur, its arches casting shadows on the snow-covered ground below. A highlight of the session was photographing a train crossing the viaduct, adding life and movement to the serene winter scene.
St Patrick’s Church, Langley Moor

Built in the late 19th century, St Patrick’s Church is a beacon of faith for the community of Langley Moor. Its understated beauty, combined with its historical significance, makes it a quiet yet captivating feature of the area. The church’s traditional design has provided a place of solace for generations.
I photographed the church with its surroundings blanketed in snow, capturing its timeless charm. The snow-laden trees framing the church added an ethereal quality, creating an image that felt peaceful and reflective.
St John’s Church, Brandon

St John’s Church in Brandon is a testament to the village’s rich history, with its architecture echoing the simplicity and strength of the community it serves. This small yet striking church has been a focal point for local gatherings and worship for decades.
I focused on capturing the church’s clean lines and strong silhouette against the snowy landscape. The quiet atmosphere surrounding the building made for some beautifully tranquil shots, with the camera emphasising the texture of the snow against its stone walls.
Sunderland Bridge and Croxdale Viaduct

These two neighbouring structures tell the story of engineering across eras. Sunderland Bridge, a Georgian masterpiece from the 18th century, is a testament to durability and grace, while Croxdale Viaduct, built in the 19th century, reflects the industrial revolution’s engineering achievements. Together, they create a captivating juxtaposition of styles.
Using the drone, I captured both bridges side by side, their arches mirrored in the icy waters below. The aerial shots revealed their alignment, while ground-level photos focused on their intricate stonework, beautifully accentuated by the snow.
Prebends Cottage

Nestled near the River Wear, Prebends Cottage is a charming example of Durham’s rustic heritage. Its picturesque setting near Prebends Bridge and the Cathedral makes it a much-loved feature of the city’s riverside.
I photographed the cottage from multiple angles, focusing on its cosy appearance amidst the frosty surroundings. The images showcased the contrast between the warm tones of its stone walls and the cool whites of the wintery landscape.
Durham Cathedral

One of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, Durham Cathedral is a masterpiece of Norman architecture. Towering over the city, its grand design and historical significance make it a perennial favourite for photographers and visitors alike.
With the drone, I captured sweeping shots of the Cathedral, showing its commanding position atop the Wear. The snowy city below added a magical touch, while my camera captured close-ups of its intricate details, creating a perfect blend of grandeur and intimacy.
Durham Castle

Standing alongside the Cathedral as part of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham Castle is a majestic reminder of the city’s medieval past. Now a college for Durham University, its imposing design and rich history make it an integral part of the city’s identity.
I focused on aerial shots of the Castle, its turrets and walls rising proudly above the cityscape. The snow provided a dramatic backdrop, emphasizing its fortitude and timeless appeal.
Reflections on the Day
The snow brought a fresh perspective to some of Durham’s most familiar sights, turning them into scenes straight out of a winter postcard. Whether capturing the intricate details of a statue or the sweeping grandeur of a viaduct, today reminded me of the power of perspective. I hope the images and video I captured today help to share the magic of these places with all of you.
