Our recent trip to Scarborough was a perfect blend of excitement, beauty, and a few close calls with the local wildlife! I was up and out early, eager to make the most of the morning light and capture some of Scarborough’s most iconic spots. We had our sights set on four locations, but as with all good plans, things didn’t go exactly as expected. Nevertheless, we managed to capture some brilliant shots at three incredible locations. Here’s how the day unfolded.
St Mary’s Church in the Early Morning Sun
First on our list was St Mary’s Church, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Bathed in the soft, golden light of the early morning sun, the church looked absolutely stunning. The combination of the ancient stonework and the peaceful churchyard made for some truly beautiful shots. The early morning quiet gave us the perfect opportunity to capture the serenity and timelessness of this historic site. It was a great way to start the day, and I’m really excited to see how these photos turn out after editing.
A Missed Opportunity at Scarborough Castle
Next, I had planned to capture Scarborough Castle, a true jewel of the town. Unfortunately, as the castle is an English Heritage site, drones are not allowed. I considered standing outside the grounds to get some shots, but with the number of seagulls around, it just didn’t feel safe. Seagulls and drones don’t mix well, and I didn’t want to risk losing any equipment—or worse, disturbing the birds. So, I decided to play it safe and move on to the next location.
Freddie Gilroy Sculpture: A Close Call
We then headed to the North Bay to capture the Freddie Gilroy sculpture. This larger-than-life statue is a powerful tribute to the veterans of World War II, and I was determined to get some great shots. The sculpture itself was incredible to photograph, especially with the beach and sea providing a dramatic backdrop. However, the local seagulls had other ideas! One particularly bold bird came dangerously close to taking out the drone, but thankfully, it missed. Despite the aerial attack, we managed to capture some wonderful shots that really highlight the significance and beauty of this piece of art.
Oliver’s Mount War Memorial: A View from the Top
Our final stop was the War Memorial on Oliver’s Mount, and it was well worth the trip. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of Scarborough that you just can’t get from anywhere else. The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and the scenery was perfect for capturing some amazing footage. There were a few council workers cutting the grass, so I’ll have to do some editing to keep the shots looking pristine, but overall, the experience was fantastic. The memorial itself stands as a poignant reminder of the past, and I’m really proud of the shots we captured.
Next Steps: Editing the Footage
Now that we’ve wrapped up the shoot, it’s time to get down to editing the footage and photos. I’m excited to bring out the best in each shot and share the beauty of Scarborough with you all. From the peaceful stillness of St Mary’s Church to the sweeping views from Oliver’s Mount, I think we’ve truly captured the essence of this wonderful town.
Stay tuned for the final images and footage—we hope you like them as much as we enjoyed capturing them. As always, our goal is to capture your world from our perspective, and we can’t wait to show you Scarborough through our lens.
Beautiful, thanks for the memories. Ive not been here since the kids were young.
