This afternoon, I ventured to Newcastle upon Tyne with my drone for the very first time. Despite its close proximity, I’ve somehow never explored this vibrant city from above, and what an adventure it turned out to be! From historic landmarks to modern marvels, Newcastle’s skyline offered a stunning mix of past and present. Here’s a look at today’s highlights:

Tyne Bridge: The City’s Iconic Arch

The Tyne Bridge, completed in 1928, is Newcastle’s most recognisable symbol. Its striking steel arch, designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long, was inspired by the Hell Gate Bridge in New York. A vital connection between Newcastle and Gateshead, the bridge played a key role in the development of the city during the 20th century.

With the drone, I captured sweeping views of the Tyne Bridge from multiple angles, including shots of its reflection in the river. The interplay of light and shadows on the steel structure added depth to the aerial photos, while the backdrop of Newcastle’s cityscape made for dramatic video footage.

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music: A Modern Gem

Formerly known as Sage Gateshead, The Glasshouse is a striking modern concert venue situated on the south bank of the Tyne. Designed by Sir Norman Foster, its undulating glass structure is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. The venue hosts world-class performances and is a symbol of the region’s cultural renaissance.

Flying over The Glasshouse, I captured its unique curves and how the glass façade mirrors the surrounding river and sky. From above, the contrast between the sleek modern design and the historic bridges nearby was particularly striking, creating a visual narrative of Newcastle’s evolving identity.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, opened in 2001, is a marvel of engineering and design. Known as the “Blinking Eye Bridge” due to its tilting motion, it connects Newcastle and Gateshead and serves as a pedestrian and cycle path. It was the first bridge of its kind, tilting to allow boats to pass beneath.

Using the drone, I captured the bridge’s elegant sweep across the Tyne, focusing on its symmetry and relationship with the surrounding landmarks. The aerial footage highlighted the bridge’s graceful design and the way it lights up as dusk sets in, creating a beautiful visual spectacle.

This Grade I listed church, completed in 1796, is a striking example of neo-classical design in Newcastle. Its elliptical shape and tall spire make it a unique addition to the city’s skyline. Historically, it served as an Anglican church before becoming a Presbyterian place of worship.

The drone captured the church’s distinctive architecture, with its spire reaching toward the sky amidst a bustling urban backdrop. From above, the views emphasised its historic charm and its location, tucked between the modernity of Newcastle’s cityscape and the meandering River Tyne.

Newcastle Cathedral, also known as St Nicholas' Cathedral, dates back to the 14th century and is one of Newcastle’s most historic buildings. Its lantern spire, added in the 15th century, is a defining feature of the city’s skyline and a beacon for travellers arriving by sea.

The drone captured breathtaking views of the cathedral’s intricate rooflines and surrounding architecture. From above, the symmetry and details of the medieval craftsmanship were brought to life, while the surrounding city buzzed with activity.

As the light began to fade, I headed to St James’ Park, home to Newcastle United Football Club. This iconic stadium, with a capacity of over 52,000, is a hub of passion and energy for fans across the region.

Although the light was low, the drone captured atmospheric images of the stadium illuminated against the darkening sky. The contrast between the bright floodlights and the surrounding city gave a dramatic edge to the photos and video footage, perfectly showcasing this sporting landmark.

Reflections on the Day

Today was a wonderful introduction to capturing Newcastle from above. The city’s blend of historic and modern landmarks provided endless opportunities for creative exploration, and the drone offered unique perspectives that brought these iconic sites to life. From the timeless grandeur of the Tyne Bridge to the contemporary elegance of The Glasshouse, Newcastle’s beauty truly shines when seen from the sky.
