What started as a planned day of capturing specific locations in Scarborough quickly turned into an adventure filled with unexpected opportunities and new experiences. Thanks to a few chance encounters and some spontaneous decisions, I ended up with footage from three more fantastic locations—each with its own set of challenges and surprises.

Scarborough Open Air Theatre: A Seagull Showdown

My family decided to take a ride on the Scarborough North Bay Railway, so while I was waiting for them, I found myself near the Open Air Theatre. With some time to kill, I figured why not capture a few shots? The theatre, nestled among trees with its iconic stage over the lake, seemed like the perfect subject. I managed to get the drone up for a bit, but once again, the seagulls were out in full force. The high banking around the area also made it tricky to keep the drone in sight, so I couldn’t take it too far. I’m not entirely sure how the footage will turn out, but I’m hopeful that despite the challenges, there will be some good shots in there.

Peasholm Park: Model Naval Warfare Madness

As we continued our day, we happened upon the model naval warfare event at Peasholm Park. This was a totally unexpected find, and to my surprise, they allowed me to film it! The event was incredible, with model ships reenacting naval battles complete with unpredictable pyrotechnics. However, the combination of sudden explosions and dive-bombing seagulls made filming a bit of a challenge. I’m not sure how much of the footage will be usable, but it was definitely an experience worth capturing. If nothing else, it was a great opportunity to practice filming in unpredictable conditions.

Scarborough Cricket Club: A Friendly Encounter

On the walk back, I passed by the Scarborough Cricket Club, where a match was in full swing. I decided to pop in and ask if I could capture some aerial footage. The staff were incredibly kind and allowed me to film, which was a fantastic opportunity. I got some great shots of the game, with the lush green pitch providing a beautiful contrast to the surrounding area. Unfortunately, one of the players mentioned that the drone was a bit distracting, especially when he got caught out. Not wanting to cause any issues, I quickly brought the drone down. The staff were really understanding, and I’m excited to share the footage with them once it’s edited. I hope they like the final product!

Lessons Learned and New Tricks

Today was certainly a day full of new experiences, from dodging seagulls to capturing spontaneous events. It was a great chance to learn some new tricks and adapt to different filming environments. While not everything went according to plan, these unexpected opportunities often lead to the most interesting footage. I’m looking forward to editing all the material and seeing how it turns out.

Stay tuned for the finished videos and photos—I think they’ll provide a unique perspective on Scarborough’s hidden gems and lively events.
