Thorngreen Limekilns, Allendale
Thorngreen Lime Kilns, located near Allenheads in Northumberland, are a fascinating remnant of the region's industrial past. These lime kilns, built into the hillside of Slag Hill, were operational until the mid-20th century. Once connected to Thorn Green Quarry by a short tramway, the kilns played a vital role in lime production, which was essential for agriculture and building materials. Through aerial footage and ground-level photography, I captured the grandeur and rugged beauty of these structures, highlighting their historical significance. Now Grade II listed, the kilns have been ingeniously preserved using modern techniques, ensuring that they remain a striking feature of the landscape. This project showcases the importance of the Thorngreen Lime Kilns in Northumberland’s industrial heritage.
