St Thomas' Church, Stanley Crook

St Thomas’ Church in Stanley Crook, a Grade II listed building, was built in 1879 to serve the growing community of this former mining village. Constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and featuring a Welsh slate roof, the church’s architectural style stands out with its Geometrical features and south-west tower. Originally built to accommodate 500 people, the church has witnessed the rise and fall of local industry, remaining a central part of village life for many years. Through aerial footage and detailed ground photography, this project captures the beauty and historical significance of St Thomas’ Church, highlighting its intricate stonework, striking rooflines, and peaceful graveyard. The images reflect both the grandeur of the building and its quiet role within the rural landscape of County Durham.
