St Michael's Church, Houghton-le-Spring

St Michael and All Angels' Church in Houghton-le-Spring is a remarkable historic building with roots stretching back to the 12th century. As a Grade I listed structure, the church showcases a blend of architectural styles from Norman, medieval, and later periods, reflecting centuries of growth and restoration. Its most notable feature includes a 13th-century chancel, 14th-century nave arcades, and additions to the tower from the 19th century. The church is also known for its association with Bernard Gilpin, the "Apostle of the North," whose tomb lies within its walls.

Aerial footage captures the church’s imposing presence amidst its surroundings, while ground-level photography highlights the fine stonework and historical features like the medieval windows and the 19th-century tower. This project aims to showcase the architectural beauty and spiritual significance of St Michael and All Angels, preserving its legacy as a central part of Houghton-le-Spring’s history and community life.
