Hownsgill Caves
In my latest project, I captured the Hownsgill Caves near Consett, a series of man-made caves carved out during the 19th century. These caves were created as part of the quarrying activities in the area, where sandstone was extracted to build the nearby Hownsgill Viaduct. The viaduct itself was an essential part of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway, which played a key role in transporting raw materials during the Industrial Revolution. My photography showcases the rugged interiors of these historic caves, highlighting their connection to the region's industrial heritage.
